Social Media and Me

Okay, confession time. I admit it. I have A.D.D and O.C.D. (self diagnosis). Most of the time my brain is all over the place.

I have a hard time focusing (my brain, never my camera) on everything that social media entails and practically requires us to keep up with. Recently I was asked to describe in writing how I feel about the subject. Oh dear! What a question for me in particular and especially in this social media driven world. Personally, I picture navigating social media like one would a maze. When I think I'm making progress, I turn a corner and...hello! A wall. So I try a different way. Eventually though, after a few tries, I successfully make it through the labyrinth of tweets and posts.

Blogging at home

I was first introduced to Facebook many years ago by an optician's assistant; a young man in his early twenties. He enthusiastically encouraged me to join Facebook and play some game or other and briefly mentioned it would also be good for my business. He probably thought that would be the hook to get me to play the game. Little did he know I am not the sort to play online games; the only exception being Words with Friends. (Ain't nobody got time for that! Lol) I never thought I would try it, but eventually I did (just Facebook, not the game). Once I fully understood this was an opportunity to use it as a tool for my business, I entered the maze and never looked back.

Now the hard part is keeping up with all of social media with this multitask inclined brain of mine.

Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, and the list goes on. Add to that blogging, newsletters, etc. and my focus muscles are getting a serious workout. Hmm.... I wonder if that burns extra calories...?

Well, I digress...

Whilst it is my humble opinion that I can at times be social media awkward, I have to admit I don't hate it. In fact, I appreciate the discipline it has required me to cultivate and am grateful for all the wonderful people I have met along the way. It has proven to be a huge advantage in my photography business. So to that young optician's assistant I'd like to say "thank you" for encouraging me to venture into the complicated, wonderful, often confusing yet incredibly useful world of social media.
